As I walked home from work, tired and hungry. The street light was very bright I could
almost count the lines on my palm. Working for an insurance company had never
been an option for me but what do I do since I am the bread winner?
The thought of the bills I had to pay kept flashing through my
mind. Having to feed ten people was more than a burden and as a lady, it’s too
much of a responsibility.
My father lost his job when I was in part one
and my mum; please let’s not go there, she made sure all the money she had went
into all the Aso Ebi, She never cared if we starved and that happened more
often than not.
At the last semester of my year one, she came down with partial
stroke. She was never able to attend any of the parties, all the friends that kept
celebrating her wanted nothing to do with her. She learnt her lesson very late “its
only when you can walk with your two legs that you would have people around you”
she said bitterly. My siblings were very young, I was as well. My journey of 26
years was with so much ups and downs.
Graciously, I
was able to graduate despite the extra-year-threat from my biology lecturer who
would never let me rest until he had a taste of my cookie. I will not deny the
fact that, keeping myself was never an easy task. At a point in my department, I
was crowned the most beautiful girl.
Most of my colleagues and roommates saw it
as an avenue for me to make money from the guys running after me, but I wouldn’t
have any of it. It’s true the proverb that says “when you don’t have something
to think of, it’s easy to misbehave”. I served and God so good I was favoured
by one of our youth service coordinators who was moved by my conduct and then
he got me the job.
I just have
to give the details of my life before that fateful night. I had always made up
my mind that at least if I cannot have all the luxuries then, my virginity would
get them for me later.
I got home
this fateful day very tired. I walked straight to the kitchen to get the
remaining rice I cooked in the morning and then I saw this very big cockroach
coordinating things on the food I left behind. The anger that rushed into my
veins was like that of a rushing mighty wind. I couldn’t help it.
I acted on
impulse by grabbing a broom only to look back to see the cockroach had climbed
the suspended cupboard. “You can’t escape this one, you know how hungry I am
and you were never pitiful, I will make sure I see your end by smashing your
head” that I said to the cockroach.
When I saw that my hand could not reach the
height, trust me when I say I paid my development fee, still, not vertically
blessed. Then I grabbed a chair that was not so strong and…..and……. please
permit me to cry……I fell off because the chair fell apart and what did I see,
part of the chair had made its way into my vagina.
Before I knew
it, blood had started coming out. Hunger and tiredness forgotten. I had to gather
strength to crawl in order to get my phone, I quickly dialed my fiancés number
and in less than five minutes he was there and that was how he rushed me to the
hospital only to be told that I just got disvirgined...
